Both husband and wife must have the desire to be sympathetic critics for their spouse. A person cannot discover his weaknesses himself. Only the other person can know this. The hadith says: الْمُؤْمِنُ مِرْآةُ الْمُؤْمِنِ (Sunan Abu Dawud 4918). What weaknesses do I have? I cannot know this myself. But the other person can know this easily. In God's scheme of things, men and women come together in marriage so that both can become sympathetic critics for one another.
A man and woman come together in marriage. This is not only for home culture. Their marriage has a deep relation to God's creation plan. It is so that both can become training partners for each other. Earlier I used to say husband and wife are intellectual partners. Yesterday, I understood that there is something greater than this. Both are training partners for each another. In this world, every person has to train himself, purify himself and mould oneself according to God's teachings. خَلَقَ الْمَوْتَ وَالْحَيَاةَ لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًا (67.2) Make yourself best in conduct. Both men and women have to make themselves best in conduct. Husband and wife have to become best partners for each other. They cannot do this alone. To become best in conduct, both husband and wife need one another. A good partner is one who is a sympathetic critic of the other. Many things became clear to me. Since childhood I had a temperament but I didn’t know the wisdom behind it. Since childhood I always invited criticism. I once had a companion for several years whose task was only to criticize me. When he went to an Arab country and was asked what work he did, he replied: I am the critic of the greatest critic in India. This has been part of my temperament. I realized that this was a great scheme of God Almighty. Both men and women need to become sympathetic critics of one another. God placed affection between them. When there is affection between two persons, only then is it possible for both to become sympathetic critics of one another. God placed affection in human nature, so that human beings could become sympathetic critics of one another. Each one of us has to become best in conduct in terms of our thought, character, thinking and behaviour. From every aspect, we have to develop a purified personality, or become the best human being. An individual cannot do this all by himself. Every individual needs a sympathetic trainer.
